A few hours of beautiful serenity

Last week I had the opportunity to work at the library while Siobhan Koch, the Norwood Library Director was at a meeting. As I addressed the tasks at hand, I was overcome by the beauty of the library. It is a place of  knowledge, organized alphabetically. As I was gathering books requested by patrons from other BCCLS libraries (Bergen County Cooperative Library System – 75 Public Libraries in New Jersey’s Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic Counties) – I was amazed at the diversity of materials I was asked to find. From biographies and grief counseling to a new TV series and biblical stories were some of the items that had been requested from libraries as far away as Nutley and Teaneck. In this, I experienced the true beauty of how a cooperative functions: the collective power of many.

As I continued organizing and reshelving, I witnessed a few more joys. Teenagers were at the front door the second the library opened, waiting to come in and read. Patrons graciously thanked Riti, our amazing librarian for helping them find the materials they needed. High school students were there volunteering their summer hours working at the library. A patron came in to check his emails on the computer. A mom and toddler were enjoying the picture books in the children’s section.

All I could think was that our library was a thriving, giving, integral community center for Norwood. Then I thought: In my next life, I’d love to work at the library. It is a place of peace.

YOU ARE INVITED!

Monday, June 14th from 7-8pm, you are invited to attend the Norwood Public Library Board of Trustee’s meeting. The board is happy to answer questions and encourages comments, suggestions or concerns regarding the Norwood Public Library. If anyone has any specific questions ahead of time, feel free to email them to koch@bccls.org so the board can properly prepare a response. The meeting will be held on the lower level, down the ramp at the Norwood Public Library.

GOOD NEWS FOR THE NORWOOD PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Norwood Public Library funding is safe for now until the end of 2010. Mayor Barsa went to Trenton and got the tax cap waiver for Norwood.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended or helped spread the word about the May 10th Library Board of Trustees meeting. To our amazement, Mayor Barsa and Town Council Liaison Barry Scott were greeted to a standing room only meeting. It was attended by passionate, caring residents who made their voices heard about the Norwood Public Library. The meeting was filled with intriguing questions, passionate arguments and a strong supportive voice.

In a show of good faith, the Library Board of Trustees offered a small rent increase (effectively a budget cut) to Mayor Barsa and the town. The effect this budget cut has had on the library is even more pronounced, and as we assess the current situation, we will most likely need our residents help once again. Please let all your friends and neighbors know about this blog so that we can more effectively communicate to each and every Norwood resident. STAY TUNED!!

WE NEED YOUR HELP…NOW!!

WE NEED EVERYONE’S HELP!! We know it is last-minute, and we all have very busy and complicated lives, but we are requesting your attendance at tomorrow’s Norwood Public Library Board of Trustees meeting. Following is a letter from the Director of the Norwood Public Library. Mayor Barsa and Council Liaison Barry Scott plan to meet with us, as they have publicly mentioned raising our rent (yes, we pay an exorbitant amount of rent to the town as you will read below) or even the possibility of closing the library. Even if you could only make it for 15 minutes, PLEASE attend the meeting for a unified show of support!! The meeting will be held at the lower level of the Library, follow the ramp down the outside of the building.

**********************************************************************************************

Dear Patrons of the Norwood Public Library,

As I am sure that you are all aware Norwood is in serious financial difficulties. The Norwood Public Library learned at the Mayor and Council meeting on Tuesday that the council will be asking for additional money back from the Library. Last year the town funding for the Library was $527,027, of which the Library was charged $182,000 in rent. This means the Library’s working budget from Norwood was $345,027. The Library Board asked for the same funding in 2010 as was given in 2009. Any further reduction in the Library’s working budget will mean a severe cut in services provided by the Library. These cuts could include a reduction of hours, a dramatic cut in new books, audiobooks, DVDs, and CDs being purchased, a decrease in staff, and less programs for the summer. If the town is not granted the waiver from Trenton that they are requesting on Wednesday then “all bets are off” and they are considering the option of closing the Library. If the town does not continue to fund the Norwood Public Library, the Library would no longer be able to stay open and Norwood residents would not be able to use the libraries in the BCCLS system.

All meetings of the Board of Trustees are open to the public. Our meeting will be this Monday, the 10th, at 7:00pm. We were told the Mayor would be attending this meeting at 7:30pm. The Board of Trustees are asking library users to come to this meeting to hear what the Mayor has to say and to show their support for the Norwood Public Library. I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Siobhan Koch
